Everything You Need to Know About 'Barry,' the Young Barack Obama Story
Check out the first teaser and more!
-- Netflix just dropped the first teaser to "Barry," the streaming service's film about the young Barack Obama that is set to air Dec. 16.
Devon Terrell stars in the movie as a young Obama attending Columbia University, long before his run for the presidency. Terrell is a rather new face, with "Barry" his first major project, according to IMDB.
The film is set in the early 1980s, when Obama first arrived in New York City. "In a crime-ridden and racially charged environment, Barry finds himself pulled between various social spheres and struggles to maintain a series of increasingly strained relationships with his Kansas-born mother, his estranged Kenyan father, and his classmates," according to the film's official description.
"Barry is the story of a young man grappling with those same issues that his country, and arguably the world, are still coming to terms with 35 years later," the description adds.
In the clip, we mainly see Terrell from the back, moving forward in his life. Obama's junior year in college is the backdrop for a time when the future president explores his ideas and feelings on race and government in the U.S., reports Indiewire.
"Before he made us believe we can, he was Barry," the screen reads.
At the end of the 29-second clip, we finally see Terrell face forward as Obama.
According to Entertainment Weekly, Netflix actually just acquired the film, also starring Jenna Elfman and Ashley Judd, last month at the Toronto Film Festival.
The movie thus far has pretty great reviews prior to its wide release. IMDB gives it a 7.8 out of 10, while Rotten Tomatoes rates it 92 percent.
The film is written by Adam Mansbach and directed by Vikram Gandhi, who is a producer on the show "Vice."
