'Ben-Hur' Flops at the Weekend Box Office

The film's box office performance reflected last week's bad reviews.

— -- The new "Ben-Hur" movie received plenty of negative reviews last week, and its box office performance since it opened on Friday hasn't been positive, either.

"Ben-Hur," starring Jack Huston in the titular role, earned an estimated $11.4 million over the weekend to debut in fifth place. Of course, the film had a lot to live up to, given that it was a remake of the 1959 classic that won 11 Oscars and was headlined by legendary actor Charlton Heston.

Two other movies also had sub-par openings over the weekend. "War Dogs," a comedic drama starring Jonah Hill, Miles Teller and Bradley Cooper, landed in third place after making $14.3 million.

The animated story "Kubo and the Two Strings," featuring a voice cast that includes Charlize Theron and Matthew McConaughey, finished in fourth place, with $12.6 million.

For the third weekend in a row, "Suicide Squad" was the top movie. The DC super-villain flick collected $20.7 million from Friday through Sunday, and has now made more than $262 million at the domestic box office to date.
