Billy Joel on Alexa Ray: 'She Is Going to Be Fine'
Alexa Ray Joel released from the hospital following pill popping binge.
Dec. 7, 2009 -- Alexa Ray Joel might need some soothing from the Piano Man.
The 23-year-old daughter of piano legend Billy Joel and supermodel Christie Brinkley is recovering after a pill popping binge and apparent suicide attempt that landed her in the hospital Friday night. He says she's all good now.
"She is going to be fine," the singer told Long Island paper Newsday Saturday evening.
Alexa Ray Joel was taken to Manhattan's St. Vincent's Medical Center after her panicked roommate called 911 from their downtown apartment about 12:20 p.m., according to the New York Daily News.
Police sources told the Daily News that the roommate said Alexa Ray Joel "had taken pills and was feeling despondent. She said she wasn't feeling good about herself."
Two law enforcement sources told the paper that the overdose was classified as a suicide attempt brought on by ingesting eight sleeping pills, although a person close to Alexa Ray Joel said she only took Traumeel, a homeopathic antihistamine.
But most homeopathic antihistamine pills actually don't contain any antihistamine -- "homeopathic" means that drug makers diluted the antihistamine to trace amounts, creating a sugar pill that holds "the memory" of the antihistamine. Because of the dilution, it's unlikely Traumeel could cause such an adverse reaction.
Although Billy Joel was confident of his daughter's well being, he wasn't by her side at the hospital. His former wife, Brinkley, arrived there Saturday afternoon while the singer remained at his home in Sag Harbor, on the eastern end of Long Island.
"Billy didn't go so it didn't become a circus atmosphere," a friend told the Daily News. "He was in constant phone contact."
Joel's Roller Coaster Relationships
Alexa Ray Joel was released from St. Vincent's Sunday night, according to the New York Post.
Alexa Ray Joel blogs often about her roller coaster relationship with her now ex-boyfriend and band mate, Jimmy Riot. In August, she went off on her MySpace page, writing, "I don't like dating!!! Wish I could be in a relationship again without having to date. I HATE going out!!"
She also vented: "UGH!!! MEN!!!" and "Is anybody else finding it a difficult 'dating world' out there? I'm so terrible at dating -- I don't know if I'll ever get used to it! And I HATE the game-playing! Can't stand it. I live in the greatest city in the world and I can't seem to meet an interesting guy who also happens to be NICE. Go figure..."
Alexa Ray Joel opened up last year to People magazine about her troubles, saying, "I can get very dark. I can get very in my own head and depressed as many other artists can."
It's not surprising that the daughter of two stars is prone to relationship woes. She's the only child of Joel and Brinkley, whose nine-year marriage collapsed in divorce in 1994. Brinkley went on to marry and very publicly divorce businessman Peter Cook, a drama that also took a toll on Alexa Ray Joel, according to the Daily News.
Emotional lows also run in the family.
"I was suicidal," Billy Joel told Details magazine last year. "I was 21. It's a tough age. Things hit you really hard. A relationship with a girl had ended and I was devastated, and then it didn't work out with the recording we did, and I just figured the world didn't need another failed musician."
