After Bristol and Levi, What Unlikely Couple Is Next?

July 19, 2010— -- The recent news that Bristol Palin and Levi Johnston were engaged came as a shock to many.

After all, here's a couple whose relationship imploded on the world stage and turned into a bitter family feud involving Palin's mother Sarah Palin, the former vice presidential candidate.

Following their breakup, the pair traveled very different paths: Bristol Palin went on to be a spokeswoman for teen abstinence; Levi Johnston posed for Playgirl.

But like star-crossed lovers, Palin and Johnston found a way to come back together, reuniting for the sake of their year-old son, Tripp.

"It's like Romeo and Juliet in Wasilla," Joy Behar said on "The View."

And while their relationship may seem rife with reality TV-like drama, according to Thomas Van Flein, the Palin family attorney, there's no plan for the young mom to chroncile her romance anytime soon.

"There is a lot of public speculation that Bristol and Levi have signed up for a reality show about their relationship," he said in a statement to ABC News today. "They have not. While several networks have pitched different concepts, Bristol has not agreed to participate in any show. Her focus remains on doing what is best for Tripp and her family."

Though they announced their engagement last week on the cover of US Weekly, senior editor Lindsay Powers said the news shouldn't come as a total surprise.

"About a month ago we saw the relationship thawing between them," Powers told ABCNews.com.

That's when Palin told "Good Morning America" that she was getting back together with Johnston for Tripp's sake.

"I am doing my best to raise a happy, active and healthy boy," Palin said. "I believe that wherever possible, if the parents can cooperate and co-parent in a positive way, the child will benefit. Levi and I are turning a new page here as co-parents to this wonderful boy and putting aside the past because doing so is in Tripp's best interest."

They certainly wouldn't be the first couple to reunite for the kids and they certainly won't be the last. But will other celebrity couples who have split up follow in their footsteps? Last week, several former couples made headlines. ABCNews.com thought it would be fun to take a look at their chances of getting back together. Powers ranked them from most to least likely.

Jesse James and Sandra Bullock

Jesse James has made no secret of his desire to reunite with Sandra Bullock. His recent purchase of a $1.9 million estate in Austin, Texas, the same town where Bullock owns a home, seems right in keeping with his goal.

James has said he bought the home so his three children, from his previous marriages, could maintain their relationship with Bullock and he could get to know Louis, the adopted son that Bullock is now raising as a single mom.

During his latest custody battle with second wife Janine Lindemulder over whether their daughter Sunny can move to Texas with James, the custom bike builder revealed that Bullock took care of Sunny while he was in rehab for sex addiction.

Could the kids bring them back together?

"There are reports that they are talking again," Powers said. "You could see that happening."

"At the time Sandra had her divorce finalized," Powers added. "That to me means she's moving on. She was hurt very publicly."

"I do know that they are working together to be co-parents and make sure that their relationship is civil," she said.

It's a start.

Lindsay Lohan and Samantha Ronson

After Lindsay Lohan was sentenced to 90 days in jail, her old girlfriend Samantha Ronson came to her aid.

Ronson took her side in a Twitter war with comedian Joan Rivers, who poked fun at the 24-year-old starlet.

Then last week, after Lohan checked into rehab for the fourth time, her ex-girlfriend went to see her.

"Lindsay and Sam are not reuniting at this point," Powers said, "but Sam is there to support her and get her through rehab."

It's a familiar role for Ronson, who was nearly inseparable from Lohan after the last time she went to rehab. Their close friendship grew into a relationship. But after many public spats, Ronson finally called it quits last spring.

Lohan's father Michael Lohan for one was glad, but since the breakup, it seems Lohan has been spiraling downward.

Could Lohan's latest crisis bring them back together?

Powers cautions that although "Lindsay is going through a tough time and they are talking a lot," the couple has certainly had "rocky moments" in the past. That said, they have a better chance of reuniting than the next couple.

Rihanna and Chris Brown

Last week there were Internet rumors that Rihanna had spoken by phone with her ex Chris Brown for the first time in almost a year after seeing his emotional performance at the BET Awards.

Rihanna's rep reportedly denied the rumors.

But it wouldn't be the first time Rihanna reunited with Brown after he assaulted her in February 2009. Weeks after she was bloodied and bruised, Rihanna was photographed spending time with Brown at Sean "Diddy" Combs' Miami mansion.

Not so, this time, said Powers.

For one thing, Brown, who pleaded guilty to felony assault last August to avoid jail time, is forbidden from contacting Rihanna while he's on probation for four more years.

"At this point, it's probably pretty slim," Powers said. "Even though they both admitted they were each other's first loves, it was a pretty contentious breakup. Besides, I feel as if she's moved on."

That would be because of Matt Kemp, the pro baseball player Rihanna has been dating and credits with keeping her grounded since her breakup with Brown.

Mel Gibson and Oksana Grigorieva

If Rihanna and Brown are a "longshot," Powers said there is "no way" Mel Gibson and his ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva, the mother of his infant daughter, are getting back together.

Like Brown, Gibson is under investigation for a possible domestic assault against Grigorieva in which he allegedly broke her teeth.

Regardless of what the investigation finds, their fate as a couple has already been sealed by leaked audio tapes in which Gibson can be heard spewing hatred and vitriol. Besides the invectives he hurls at Grigorieva, Gibson can be heard insulting blacks and Latinos.

"Those tapes are very damning," Powers said. "They had a very contentious split and it certainly seems unlikely they will get back together."
