Marvel's latest film earned an estimated $181.8 million, ranking as the fifth-best domestic debut of all time. It trails only "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," "Jurassic World," and Marvel's two "Avengers" films.
In "Captain America: Civil War," Chris Evans' titular character clashes with Robert Downey Jr.'s Iron Man over a controversial government policy intended to regulate the superheroes. It features a number of other heroes, including Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, Anthony Mackie as Falcon, Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlet Witch, Paul Rudd as Ant-Man, and Tom Holland as Spider-Man.
Marvel is owned by Disney, the parent company of ABC News.
"The Jungle Book," another Disney movie that had finished in first place the previous three weekends, slipped to second place, with $21.9 million.
