Charlie Sheen and Brooke Mueller in 'Paradise'

Charlie Sheen and Brooke Mueller vacation in Mexico; where are the kids?

Aug. 22, 2011 — -- The story of Charlie Sheen and Brooke Mueller just got a bit more bizarre.

After reportedly flying Mueller out of a Mexican drug rehab clinic and setting her up with Los Angeles doctors, Sheen whisked Mueller back below the border, and they're enjoying what looks like a romantic getaway.

Photographers snapped the couple kicking back in a hammock, drinking what appear to be bottles of water beach-side, and pretending to smoke bananas. Far from the antagonistic couple they've been for most of the year, Sheen, 45, and Mueller, 34, look like love birds. Sheen's happily chirping away as well.

"Forgot how much I love this place. #mexico is paradise...." he tweeted Sunday. "Brooke and I are thinking about staying for the rest of the month!!!"

It's not clear who's taking care of the couple's twin sons, 2-year-old Max and Bob, while their parents are in Mexico. Representatives for Sheen and Mueller did not immediately respond to ABCNews.com's requests for comment.

The Mexico trip is the latest in what's been an interesting summer for the former "Two and a Half Men" star and his most recent ex-wife. In July, according to TMZ.com, Sheen flew Mueller out of the Mexican rehab clinic where she was said to be seeking treatment and set her up with the same doctors who treated his addiction issues earlier this year. Sheen reportedly footed the bill.

The Mexican treatment would have reportedly required Mueller to take the hallucinogen Ibogaine to help rewire her brain. Ibogaine is a psychoactive chemical compound that is illegal in the U.S.

Back in the U.S., Mueller took a break from rehab to meet up with Sheen and their sons and pose for a family photo.

Sheen and Mueller's Rocky Relationship

Mueller has been in and out of rehab over the past year. Despite that, her custody agreement with Sheen reportedly does not require either of them to undergo drug testing.

Sheen famously lost his sitcom job after a January bender and told ABC News' "20/20" that he was "banging seven-gram rocks" of drugs while partying. Mueller has been to rehab multiple times.

The former couple's divorce became official on May 2. Since then, they've gone to court multiple times to hammer out details of their custody agreement regarding their sons. Mueller currently maintains primary custody of the boys.

The parents' history of drug abuse has come up often in the legal proceedings. In court papers filed before the March custody agreement, Mueller said she was struggling with her sobriety and attending a day program as well as living with a sober companion. She said her mother would assist her in caring for the children, according to the documents.

The documents also said that for a time in January before custody became an issue, Mueller and the twin boys lived with Sheen and his two then-girlfriends, Natalie Kenly and Rachel Oberlin.

Mueller, Sheen and the two girlfriends even went on vacation to the Bahamas together, but Mueller alleged that Sheen was drinking and his behavior turned violent. She said that Sheen punched her, threatened to stab her with a pen knife and spit on her feet, according to the documents.

Mueller said Sheen also told her that he "hated his ex-wife, Denise Richards, violently and he was going to have her hair shaved off," according to the court records.

Mueller and Sheen married in May 2008. In November 2010, he filed for divorce.
