Charlize Theron Says She Never 'Ghosted' Sean Penn

— -- Charlize Theron wants to put an end to the rumors surrounding her breakup with Sean Penn once and for all.

In an interview with WSJ Magazine, Theron opened up about her breakup with Penn, directly addressing the rumor that she "ghosted," or cut off all communication with the "I Am Sam" actor when they split in 2015.

"There is this need to sensationalize things," Theron said. "When you leave a relationship there has to be some f***ing crazy story or some crazy drama. And the f***ing ghosting thing, like literally I still don't even know what it is."

Theron, 40, and Penn, 55, began dating in 2014 and split last summer. The "Mad Max" actress noted that the reason for their breakup is not as complicated as people are making it out to be, calling the relationship "its own beast."

"We were in a relationship and then it didn't work anymore," Theron said. "And we both decided to separate. That's it."

Theron also discussed how she and Penn handled Theron's adoption of her daughter August, which coincided with the end of their relationship. Theron, who was already mother to 4-year-old son Jackson, revealed that Penn "had a very clear understanding" that the actress was planning to adopt August, but noted that she never planned to adopt her with Penn.

"When you're with somebody and it comes to kids, you can't bulls***," Theron said. "And so I was always very honest with Sean that I wanted to have more kids. And he was very supportive."

Theron also dismissed rumors that Penn was considering adopting Jackson, saying, "It's not something that happens in 18 months."

"So there was an understanding that I was a single mom with a very young boy who I had to put in a situation where he understood that 'Mommy' dates but that he does not have a father," Theron said. "You have to be very careful and very honest about that stuff. And Sean was great with all of that."
