Chrissy Teigen Ignites Twitter Storm Over the Word 'Oriental'
The model has exchanged tweets over the word "oriental."
-- Chrissy Teigen is no stranger to Twitter disagreements.
It seems the model has gotten herself into another one over the use of the word "oriental."
It all began when Teigen took a flight and was offered a choice of salad dressings with her meal. She took to Twitter to tell her 2.6 million followers what happened.
The 30-year-old model, whose mother is Thai, wrote that she was not offended by the word "oriental."
But apparently some of her followers were offended and told Teigen she should be too -- which only made her push back.
When others explained why it should be offensive, Teigen appeared to relent.
But then she went back to her original stance.
When someone pointed out that the word is offensive to others and "perpetuates cultural ignorance," Teigen still wasn't convinced.
She also called out some Twitter users for telling her what she should be offended by.
In the end, Teigen reiterated her original stance: "Do I think saying 'oriental' is inappropriate? Yes. Laughable and ignorant. Am I OFFENDED when I hear it? No." And while she chalked up the entire spat to a miscommunication, she got in a last word.
