Evelyn Lozada Files for Divorce From Chad Johnson
Reality-TV star files for divorce after domestic-battery arrest.
Aug. 15, 2012 -- Evelyn Lozada has filed for divorce from former Miami Dolphin's receiver Chad "Ochocinco" Johnson, ending their 41-day marriage after an incident in which the football player allegedly head-butted the VH1 reality-TV star.
A representative for Lozada confirmed that the divorce proceedings were underway Tuesday.
"Given the recent events that have taken place, Evelyn has decided to file for divorce and move on with her life," Lozada's lawyer, Michael B. Gilden, told "The Insider" in a statement.
The reality-TV star was treated at a hospital for lacerations to her head after an argument between the two Saturday night allegedly ended with Johnson, 34, ramming Lozada with his head. He was later arrested on domestic battery charges.
Within 24 hours of his arrest, the Dolphins terminated the six-time Pro Bowl receiver's contract. VH1 shelved the upcoming reality-television program starring the couple, "Ev & Ocho." The show was set to debut Sept. 3.
Johnson spent the night in Broward County Jail, according to jail records, and bond was set at $2,500. A judge Monday ordered that the couple have no contact, according to WPLG, ABC's Miami affiliate.
Johnson, a frequent tweeter, Tuesday broke his silence regarding the situation with a post on his official website, OCNN.
"I am going to let the legal process run its course. I wish Evelyn nothing but the best, I have no negative words to say about her, the only thing I can say is I love her very much," said Johnson.
"I will continue to be positive and stay training hard for another opportunity in the NFL. I appreciate all my fans and supporters and if I have disappointed you in any way, you have my sincerest apologies. Once again I will continue to stay positive and appreciate all the support during this tough period in my life," he said.
The newlyweds began arguing while they were unpacking groceries Saturday night when Lozada found a receipt for a box of condoms in the trunk, according to the police report. They sat in the driveway in their parked Smart Car, arguing, when Johnson grabbed Lozada and head butted her, she told Davie, Fla., police.
"I observed [redacted] to have a laceration on her forehead approximately 3'' in length," police officer Christopher Epps wrote in his arrest report.
After allegedly head-butting his wife, Johnson began screaming, "I don't give a [expletive]. I don't give a [expletive] about my career," prompting Lozada to run to a neighbor's house, where she called the police, according to the report.
When Epps spoke to Johnson, he said Lozada head-butted him. He said he was driving around to give her space, not looking for her.
"Based off the statements given to me, [redacted] injuries and my observations, I placed Johnson under arrest charging him with Simple Battery Domestic," Epps wrote in the report.
Johnson married Lozada July 4. Lozada had been a cast member on the VH1 reality-TV series "Basketball Wives" when she was engaged to NBA star Antoine Walker, with whom she had a decade-long relationship.
Johnson also appeared on "Dancing With the Stars."
