What to Expect From Tonight's Screen Actors Guild Awards
The red carpet is already rolled out for the 2016 awards show.
-- The 2016 Screen Actors Guild Awards airs tonight from Los Angeles. With the red carpet already rolled out, and the statues awaiting, what can viewers expect from the star-studded awards show?
It could be a big night for "Trumbo," which leads the nominations on the film side with three. Also, "Beasts of No Nation," "Carol," "Room," "Spotlight," "Steve Jobs," "The Big Short" and "The Danish Girl" each garnered two nods apiece.
Many are wondering whether it will be another big night for "The Revenant" actor Leonardo DiCaprio and "Room" actress Brie Larson. Both took home trophies at the Golden Globes earlier this month. And a win tonight could mean they have a good chance of winning the Academy Award for their performances next month.
There is one actress who is guaranteed to go home a winner. Carol Burnett will join the likes of Kirk Douglas, Debbie Reynolds and Betty White, when she takes home the Life Achievement Award. It will be presented to the comedienne by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.
Onstage, viewers will also see stars such as Anthony Mackie, Julianne Moore, Mark Ruffalo, Susan Sarandon, Sarah Silverman and Kristen Wiig. They are all set to present trophies.
And although there was much uproar over the lack of diversity in the nominees at the upcoming Oscar Awards, there was almost no backlash when the SAG Awards nods were revealed.
It may be because British actor Idris Elba scored a nomination for his role in "Beasts of No Nation" and for his TV series "Luther." Not to mention the cast of "Straight Outta Compton," the N.W.A. biopic, earned a nomination for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. Actors from the cast, including Corey Hawkins, Jason Mitchell, and O'Shea Jackson Jr. will also take the stage to present.
The 22nd annual Screen Actors Guild Awards, which are set to air live tonight on TNT and TBS, will be held at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.
