'The Girl on the Train' Makes Stop at No. 1 in Weekend Box Office
The Emily Blunt film raked in an estimated $24.7 million.
-- "The Girl on the Train" pulled in to the top spot at the box office over the weekend.
The adaptation of Paula Hawkins' bestseller, starring Emily Blunt, earned an estimated $24.7 million to score the victory.
Blunt plays Rachel, "the girl on the train," who becomes fascinated by a couple she sees out the window during her commute. When the female half of the couple goes missing, Rachel gets caught up in one big murder mystery.
Last week's box office champ, "Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children," finished in second place over the weekend, collecting $15 million.
"The Birth of a Nation," written, directed by and starring Nate Parker, debuted in sixth place after making $7.1 million. The film -- the story of Nat Turner's 1831 Virginia slave rebellion -- was a Sundance Film Festival favorite that made headlines in recent weeks, in part because of the attention surrounding a 17-year-old rape case involving Parker in which he was found not guilty.
The comedy "Middle School: The Worst Years of My Life," based on the book by James Patterson, opened in seventh place, with $6.9 million.
