'GMA' 40 for 40: Gloria Estefan Says Seeing Her Life Story on Broadway Is 'Surreal'
The artist chats about her recently opened musical "On Your Feet!"
-- Gloria Estefan said it's "surreal" seeing her and her husband's story come to life in her recently opened Broadway show "On Your Feet!"
"They pulled me into the story so it's almost like I'm watching someone else's story and there's moments, of course, that really hit home," Estefan said in an interview with "Good Morning America" co-anchor Amy Robach during "GMA's" 40 for 40 live stream event, commemorating the show's 40th anniversary.
"Like when our lead is being helped out of the wheelchair ... that throws me right back into that exact moment after our accident," she said of her 1990 tour bus crash. "Those moments that become really real for us, become a little tough, but other than that it's a party."
The musical, which features smash hits like "Conga" and “1-2-3,” also tells of the romance between Estefan and her husband Emilio, who have been married for 37 years.
"It goes quick," Estefan told co-anchor TJ Holmes of her long marriage. "He makes me laugh, which is great. He's a party."
"The love story is the crucial thing in the play," she said.
As for her secret to a successful relationship like her own, Estefan simply said, "If you take care of each other, then it's all good."
