Golden Globes 2016: Highlights of Ricky Gervais' Monologue
Caitlyn Jenner, gender equality and more.
-- Ricky Gervais promised to bring his usual brand of offensive humor to the 73rd Golden Globes, and he delivered right off the bat with a biting monologue that tackled everything from Caitlyn Jenner to equal pay in Hollywood.
Gervais began by saying he was planning to go into hiding after his monologue, and referenced Sean Penn’s secret meeting with drug kingpin El Chapo, joking that, “Not even Sean Penn will find me.”
The comedian also mentioned Caitlyn Jenner’s transformation, but pointed out what a role model she’s been for the transgender community.
Gervais then poked fun at Jennifer Lawrence’s recent essay on the gender wage gap. He followed that up by saying he was getting paid the same amount Tina Fey and Amy Poehler made for hosting the Golden Globes last year – but then revealed they actually shared the sum.
When the host received some shocking reactions from the crowd, he made sure to remind them that he “doesn’t care.” Gervais ended by telling the nominees that no one cares about their award more than they do.
