Jane Fonda Says Katharine Hepburn Didn't Think She Was 'Glamorous Enough'

— -- Jane Fonda is highly lauded for her effortless style and glamour, but the actress revealed that there was one person who didn't always think so.

In an interview with Sandra Bernhard on her Sandyland SiriusXM radio show, Fonda recalled an encounter she had with Hepburn in the 1980s, when the actresses were co-starring in the film "On Golden Pond" together.

"I remember Katharine Hepburn saying to me, 'You never could’ve made it back then,'" Fonda said.

Fonda, 78, believes that Hepburn's comments alluded to her "look," and noted that Hepburn, who died in 2003, thought that Fonda wasn't "glamorous enough" to be in the spotlight.

“She was a prickly one," Fonda said of the late actress. "I just wasn’t glamorous enough. She hated the fact that I didn’t put enough attention to how I presented myself.”

Fonda explained that Hepburn "had a look," and noted that their exchange taught the "Grace and Frankie" actress the importance of presentation.

“[Hepburn] taught me that self-conscious isn’t necessarily bad, that it’s important to be aware of how you present [yourself],” Fonda said. “Not just...what you have on and how you look, but your presentation as a human being on all levels was important."

She continued: "I’m thinking I give her more credit than she deserves, but at least how you look and what you dress, she felt, was very important and she hated the fact that at the time I didn’t put any attention to it."
