'Jem and the Holograms' Trailer Debuts; How the Film Seems to Differ From the Cartoon

The trailer for the live action movie just debuted.

— -- Women of a certain age will inevitably remember "Jem and the Holograms," a popular cartoon that aired from 1985-1988.

The series focused on Jerrica Benton, a powerful, female record studio executive by day, and a "truly outrageous" rock star (stage name: Jem) by night.

The cartoon has since been re-imagined as a live-action film set to hit theaters this December, though it doesn't necessarily follow the plot line of the show.

Based on the trailer (above), here a few ways it promises to differ:

3. The conflict may be between Jem and the Holograms: In both the film and TV versions, Jem's band is called "The Holograms," and is comprised of Kimber and two girls who grew up with Jerrica. In the film, there seems to be in-fighting in the band when the record label pressures Jerrica to go solo. In the TV show, sure, there's jealousy, but Jem and the Holograms are mainly at odds with other bands -- especially the Misfits.

4. Jerrica becomes Jem by putting on Kesha-esque makeup: Pink wigs, neon makeup, brightly-colored costumes: Jerrica becomes Jem by changing the way she acts, sounds and looks, according to the trailer. Not so in the cartoon, when to become Jem, Jerrica just touched her "Jemstar earrings," which were powered by Synergy. In doing so, she was unrecognizable as her everyday self.

5. What does Rio know? Jerrica's boyfriend is Rio Pacheco, who in the TV version doesn't know that she's also Jem. In the film, it seems that Rio is part of the record company that transforms Jerrica's life.
