John Mayer, Katy Perry's Ups and Downs
John Mayer and Katy Perry spark up their romance again.
July 8, 2013 -- intro: If there was any doubt that John Mayer and Katy Perry rekindled their romance, Mayer made his feelings for the "Firework" singer public when he dedicated a song to her during his tour-opening show this past weekend.
The shout-out came days after Perry posted a picture of the couple cuddling on the Fourth of July. On stage at Milwaukee's Marcus Amphitheatre, Mayer, 35, thanked Perry, 28, for helping him recover from vocal cord surgery last August.
"She was so patient," he told the audience, according to Rolling Stone, adding that she ordered food for him when he couldn't speak.
Despite his impairment, he said Perry took the time "to continue to get to know me and love me." He then dedicated the evening's final song, "A Face to Call Home" to "Katy, who is my face to call home."
The two pop stars have been on and off since last summer, when they first stepped out together. Click through to see a history of their ups and downs.
quicklist:title: Budding Romancetext: Mayer and Perry first made headlines after a June 19, 2012, appearance together at Soho House in Los Angeles, where Us Weekly said they were getting "affectionate." Then in August, they were photographed at Los Angeles' Chateau Marmont, fueling weeks of rumors that the "Your Body Is a Wonderland" singer was the "I Kissed a Girl" gal's rebound from ex-husband Russell Brand, who filed for divorce at the end of 2011. media: 19608522
quicklist:title: Calling It Quitstext: By the end of August, the nascent couple appeared to have called it quits. The breakup was brief, however. Less than two weeks later, they were spotted out twice together -- at the FYF Festival and leaving the L.A. restaurant the Little Door. Their reunion brought new challenges since Mayer had undergone vocal cord surgery, and had to rely on what he said were "notebooks and iPad to communicate for the time being."
quicklist:title: At the Grammystext: At the Grammy Awards in February, Mayer and Perry showed plenty of PDA, holding hands and nuzzling between stints as presenters. The couple took Mayer's father to a Broadway show in December and attended President Obama's inauguration in January. Mayer told "CBS Sunday Morning," "For the first time in my life, I don't feel like I'm in a celebrity relationship. I really don't. I'm not in a high-profile -- I know it's high-profile. It's hard to explain. ... For me, it feels like something that's very human."media: 19608671
quicklist:title: Breaking Up Againtext: By March, the pair hit another rough patch. Perry seemed to vent her frustration with a March 18 tweet, "ATTENTION: Mercury is OUT of retrograde today! Thank God!" The reports of a breakup coincided with few sightings of the couple. "In the last couple of weeks people noticed that they have not spent much time together at all," Raha Lewis at People magazine told ABC News in March. Mayer finally confirmed the breakup during an April appearance on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" but did not divulge details. "Listen, it was a very private relationship going in. It was a private relationship during, and it's a private relationship, still," he said.
quicklist:title: Reunited -- Againtext: Perry hinted that the door was still open when she told Vogue in its July issue, "I was madly in love with him. I still am madly in love with him. Beautiful mind, tortured soul. I do have to figure out why I am attracted to these broken birds." By June 24, the two seemed very much back together at the Friars Foundation Awards Gala in New York City, where a source told ABC News, "They were smooching and rubbing one another's backs. And Katy had her arm around John at one point." On Independence Day, Perry joined Mayer at Philadelphia's Fourth of July Jam, where he performed. Later, next to a shot of the two wearing coordinated outfits, the "Firework" singer tweeted, 'Whose broad stripes and bright stars?!"media: 19586439
