Justin Bieber and 5 Other Stars Who've Struggled in the Spotlight
Jada Pinkett Smith asks, 'Are we bullying our young artists?'
March, 13, 2012 -- intro: When children are rapidly launched into the spotlight, many struggle to stay grounded. As they grow up in the public eye, they're often splashed across headlines for every little slip-up or mistake.
Most recently, 19-year-old Justin Bieber has made headlines for his troubles in the past week including paparazzi altercations and medical emergencies.

Scooter Braun, Bieber's manager, insists the young pop star is fine, but he tweeted a link to an essay that Jada Pinkett Smith, mother of Justin's buddy Jaden Smith, wrote, titled, "Are We Bullying Our Young Artists?"
In the essay, Pinkett Smith writes, "Do we feel as though we can say and do what we please without demonstrating any responsibility simply because they are famous? Is it okay to continually attack and criticize a famous 19 year old who is simply trying to build a life, exercise his talents while figuring out what manhood and fame is all about as he carries the weight of supporting his family...?"
After defending other young stars, such as Oscar nominee Quvenzhané Wallis, Pinkett Smith finishes by writing, "Imagine yourself, at their age, with the spotlights, challenges and responsibilities. Most of us would have fallen to the waste side [sic] before we could even get to a crashed Ferrari, a controversial romance, several heart breaks, or an Oscar nomination at NINE."
While several child stars have taken a fall, some of the lucky ones are able to find their way back to the top. Click through to see some of the young stars who have hit bumps along their Hollywood path to stardom.
quicklist: 1title: Lindsay Lohantext: In 2004, Lindsay Lohan was on top of the world. She was riding high after starring in the insanely popular teen comedy, "Mean Girls," with many other films in the works, as well as an album.
But Lohan's name quickly became infamous with the tabloids. She's been arrested twice for DUI and has been to rehab three times. After her second DUI charge, the actress released a statement saying, "It is clear to me that my life has become completely unmanageable because I am addicted to alcohol and drugs."
She's had numerous court appearances for probation violations and in 2009 her probation was extended so she could complete an alcohol course.

Lohan began dating DJ Samantha Ronson in 2008. The 26-year-old told Harper's Bazaar: "I don't want to classify myself. First of all, you never know what's going to happen -- tomorrow, in a month, a year from now, five years from now. I appreciate people, and it doesn't matter who they are, and I feel blessed to be able to feel comfortable enough with myself that I can say that."
The couple broke up the next year.
In January 2011, Lohan allegedly walked out of a Los Angeles store with a $2,500 necklace and a month later she was charged with felony grand theft. Last year, cops were called after producers of her film "Liz & Dick" found her unresponsive in her hotel room and she was charged with four misdemeanors for a June car crash and allegedly punching a woman at a New York City club.

But Lohan has also tried to pull her life together. The 26-year-old starred as Liz Taylor in the Lifetime movie "Liz & Dick," though it got blistering reviews. She also hosted "Saturday Night Live," during which she poked fun at herself. Next, she stars alongside porn star James Dean in "The Canyons."
But first, Lohan faces trial March 18 for allegedly lying to police when she said she was not driving her Porsche when it struck the back of a truck on Pacific Coast Highway in Santa Monica.media: 18607289
quicklist: 2title: Amanda Bynestext: At 11 years old, Amanda Bynes was Nickelodeon's most promising up-and-coming star. She appeared on the wildly popular children's comedy sketch show, "All That," and then went on to star in her own Nickelodeon show, "The Amanda Show."
In her teenage years, Bynes starred on the sitcom "What I Like About You" alongside Jennie Garth and took the lead on teen films "What a Girl Wants," "She's the Man" and "Sydney White."
But in 2012, the then 26-year-old started to take a fall. She was charged with a DUI last June, two counts of hit-and-run in September and two separate charges of driving with a suspended license. She was also photographed in her car smoking what looked like a pipe.
After her DUI arrest, Bynes asked for help from who else but President Obama himself.
"Hey Barack Obama ... I don't drink," she tweeted in June. "Please fire the cop who arrested me. I also don't hit and run. The end."

She was also splashed across the headlines last fall for reportedly walking around a New York City salon naked, a story the star threatened to sue over, insisting it was false.
"I'm not 'troubled.' I don't get naked in public. I'm 26, a multi-millionaire, retired. Please respect my privacy," she told Us Weekly last November.
Despite her troubles, the former child star, who now lives in New York City, told People magazine last September that she is doing just fine.
"I am retired as an actor. I am moving to New York to launch my career. I am going to do a fashion line," Bynes said. "I am not talking about being arrested for DUI because I don't drink, and I don't drink and drive. It is all false."

quicklist: 3title: Demi Lovatotext: After starring alongside the Jonas Brothers in the Disney Channel original movie "Camp Rock," Demi Lovato was catapulted to major stardom. She released hit albums, hit movies and even her own television show, "Sonny With a Chance."
The actress began to take a fall in 2010 when she struck one of her backup dancers, Alex Welch, during the South American leg of their international tour. She was also experimenting with drugs, which she said last year were given to her by promoters who wanted the singer to be seen at their club.

As Lovato began her downward spiral, her family and management team held an intervention.
"They sat me down and said, 'You can't live like this,'" Lovato told "Good Morning America's" Robin Roberts in 2011.
Lovato immediately quit her music tour and checked in to Timberline Knolls -- a residential treatment center in Illinois for women battling addiction and eating disorders.
But Lovato told Roberts that her troubles began long before her Hollywood career. As a result of being bullied as a child, Lovato said, she began a lifelong struggle with bulimia and alternately, severely restricting her eating.
"I was compulsively overeating when I was eight years old," she said. "So, I guess, for the past 10 years I've had a really unhealthy relationship with food."
Her family helped her find professional help for her food issues. But there was a secret battle she fought alone, something she desperately hid from everyone: At age 11, Lovato began cutting herself -- intentionally self-mutilating her wrists as a way of coping with emotions.
"It was a way of expressing my own shame, of myself, on my own body," she told Roberts. "I was matching the inside to the outside. And there were some times where my emotions were just so built up, I didn't know what to do. The only way that I could get instant gratification was through an immediate release on myself."
Today Lovato is outspoken about what she has gone through in hopes of helping other young girls that deal with the same issues. Her career is also thriving again. She joined the judging panel of "The X Factor" last year and her fourth album is set to come out in the late spring or summer.media: 17397517
quicklist: 4title: Miley Cyrustext: With a father as famous as Billy Ray Cyrus, Miley Cyrus was no stranger to the spotlight. She grew up on the road and on set with her famous father, but in 2006, she was launched into tween stardom with her hit Disney Channel show, "Hannah Montana."
Next thing you knew, there were Hannah Montana backpacks, sheets, toothbrushes, clothes and even gum. In 2007, Cyrus released a Hannah Montana soundtrack in which she performed songs as the fictional character and herself and in 2008 she released her own studio album. She had a music tour that was turned into a concert movie.
But her success was not without critics or controversy.
Her first big controversy came in 2008, when a Vanity Fair photo spread by Annie Liebovitz included a shot of a bare-backed Cyrus entwined in a sheet, with darkened red lips, and another of her draped over the lap of her dad, baring her midriff.
Cyrus said after the photos were released that she was embarrassed by them, but in her interview with the magazine that accompanied the spread, she called the back-baring shot "really artsy" but not "in a skanky way" and said, "You can't say no to Annie."

The Disney Channel released a statement saying, "Unfortunately, as the article suggests, a situation was created to deliberately manipulate a 15-year-old in order to sell magazines."
Vanity Fair defended the photos saying, "Miley's parents and/or minders were on the set all day. Since the photo was taken digitally, they saw it on the shoot and everyone thought it was a beautiful and natural portrait of Miley."
That same year, photos of Cyrus in her bra were leaked online, to which the singer said she hoped her fans would "understand that along the way I am going to make mistakes and I am not perfect."
VIDEO: Is Miley Cyrus Out of Control?
In 2010, TMZ released a video of Cyrus smoking salvia, a legal drug that has strong hallucinogenic effects.
The next year, another video was released from the singer's 19th birthday party in which Cyrus was presented with a cake emblazoned with the image of Bob Marley by her friend Kelly Osbourne.
In the video, Cyrus is seen responding by telling the crowd, "You know you're a stoner when your friends make you a Bob Marley cake. You know you smoke way too much f***ing weed."
"I thought salvia was your problem, Miley," Osbourne joked back.
But despite bumps along the way, Cyrus never lost her love of music. She released her third studio album, "Can't Be Tamed" in 2010, which had more provocative lyrics, and she wore more mature outfits to promote it, sparking some criticism from the media. Cyrus has said it was the first album where she really got to be herself.
"For me it's never been about fitting in. I'd rather stand out," Cyrus told E!'s Ryan Seacrest of the title track on the album. "People can relate to it. So many people feel like you have to be one way to fit in.
"It's the first step to growing up, but I think it's done the right way," she said regarding her racier music video. "I'm really proud of it."
Today, the 20-year-old looks almost completely different than she did on the days of "Hannah Montana." She chopped her long locks into an edgy, bleached blond rocker look. She's engaged to her "The Last Song" co-star Liam Hemsworth and she's working on her fourth studio album.media: 18709894
quicklist: 5title: Vanessa Hudgenstext: Vanessa Hudgens is another Hollywood starlet who launched into fame thanks to the Disney Channel. She starred in all three of the "High School Musical" films alongside Zac Efron.
The now 24-year-old then had semi-nude photos she'd taken of herself leaked in 2007, causing many to wonder if her career would suffer as a result.
"I want to apologize to my fans, whose support and trust means the world to me," Hudgens said after the photos were leaked. "I am embarrassed over this situation and regret having ever taken these photos. I am thankful for the support of my family and friends."
In 2009, topless photos of the actress leaked and her lawyer asked for them to be taken down off several websites because she was underage in the photos.
"That was just a really s***ty situation that sucked," the actress told Paper magazine earlier this year. "That was by far the worst moment of my career."
But Hudgens bounced back from the scandal, and she now appears in "Spring Breakers" alongside James Franco, Selena Gomez and Ashley Benson. She plays one of four college students who get mixed up with a drug dealer while on spring break.media: 18709928
