Matt Bomer Candid About His Home Life With Husband, 3 Kids
The actor shares details of his 2011 secret wedding to Simon Halls.
May 7, 2014 -- Matt Bomer has revealed details about his personal life in a way that the "White Collar" actor has never done before.
While promoting "The Normal Heart," which premieres May 25 and is a story of the early years of the AIDS epidemic, Bomer, 36, spoke to Out magazine and explained how the film and the original play by Larry Kramer inspired his coming out years ago.
He was candid about how his parents, who “started out Baptist, were briefly Presbyterian, and then settled into nondenominational,” took the news that their son was gay.
“I’m not going to lie and say it was a bed of roses," Bomer said. "But with the gift of time and grace, my parents chose love. And I think it’s important for people to know that. We always hear, ‘Oh, it gets better, it gets better,’ and [then] so many people go, ‘No, it doesn’t.’ I feel lucky to say that, yes, sometimes it does.”

Bomer has been with partner Simon Halls for years and they have three kids. But the actor shocked many people last month when he revealed he was secretly married in 2011.
Bomer elaborated on the wedding and that no one knew for almost three years.
“It was very chill,” he said of the nuptials. “Very small: only our nearest and dearest. There’s a security, a validity of knowing that it’s legal. It’s hard to put into words. It’s just a feeling, I guess, something about saying vows in front the people around you who love and support you. I think it was good for our family.”
When Bomer came out the next year in 2012, he said, “I frankly did not think people would be that interested. I certainly didn’t think it was going to be on the CNN ticker.”
Above all else, Bomer said that raising children with his husband has changed everything.
"There’s a level of love that really dissolves a lot of egotism and self-absorption. I mean, don’t get me wrong, I have my moments. But at a certain point in my life, my whole day would have been about this interview," he admitted.
"Now it’s a small part of a day that also includes a drop-off at school in the morning and baseball practice and a lot of other things that take precedence.”
