"The Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials," the follow-up to the 2014 original, earned an estimated $30.3 million from Friday through Sunday to open in first place.
"Black Mass," starring Johnny Depp as gangster Whitey Bulger, debuted in the runner-up spot, collecting $23.4 million.
The thriller "Captive," featuring David Oyelowo and Kate Mara, pulled in $1.4 million in approximately 800 theaters, finishing outside the top 10.
