Meet the Stylist Behind Reese Witherspoon and Julianne Moore's Oscar Looks
Leslie Fremar is a stylist for some of Hollywood's leading actresses.
-- The Oscars are a night buzzing with high-wattage style icons, so rest assured when this year’s awards air Sunday night, all eyes will be on the leading ladies of Hollywood as they lead the way to the pinnacle of red carpets.
“What people at home don’t realize is how much effort goes into one look,” stylist Leslie Fremar told ABC News. “It’s almost like, if you would compare it to your wedding, doing that over and over again, kind of creating different looks.”
Fremar would know. She is a tour de force in the fashion industry, ranking number five last year on The Hollywood Reporter's list of "Power Stylists."
The former assistant to Vogue magazine's Anna Wintour is responsible for dressing two of this year’s Oscar nominees -- Best Actress contenders Reese Witherspoon and Julianne Moore -- as well as the likes of actresses Charlize Theron and Jennifer Connelly, to name a few.
“With actresses, you know, they have strong opinions and they have, you know, insecurities and they have things that you kind of have to work with,” Fremar said. “And they have personalities that they are trying to portray to the public.”
“So that all kind of comes into play when creating a look for someone,” she said.
Fremar, who also previously worked at Prada, is now focusing on pulling together the Oscar looks for Witherspoon and Moore.
“It’s a lot of work,” she said. “There is pressure but I think there’s a lot of work so we don’t even really have time to kind of think about the pressure.”
“We’re just thinking about getting it done,” she said.
Part of what Fremar must consider as the stars’ stylist is how the designer dresses they choose will translate not just on the red carpet but also inside the show, whether the nominees are seated or walking up a set of stairs to accept their award.
“It doesn’t factor into the choice but we practice walking up the stairs and making sure that they feel comfortable sitting down,” Fremar said. “They’re sitting down for a really long time so we check all of those things.”
What Witherspoon and Moore will be wearing on this year's red carpet, Fremar would not reveal. She did say she focuses on making sure each actress stands out on their own.
“It's been a strategy from the beginning,” Fremar said of making sure the Best Actress nominees stand apart. “We’re working it out so that everything feels original and unique and, you know, they don't feel like anything is the same.”
“They have very different points of view and styles, so it's been pretty easy to kind of accomplish that,” she said.
“I'm going to leave it as a surprise,” Fremar said of Witherspoon's and Moore's Oscar looks. “But I think that it's going to be pretty show-stopping.”
