Michael Fassbender on His Return as Magneto in 'X-Men: Apocalypse'
“X-Men: Apocalypse” hits theaters May 27.
-- Michael Fassbender is back as Magneto in the ninth installment of the X-Men series, “X-Men: Apocalypse.”
“I think the great thing about the X-men movies and the comic book franchise is this idea that they're people who have been pushed to the fringes of society,” Fassbender said during his first-ever interview with "Good Morning America." “They're outcasts in some way, and I think people can really relate to that.”
Fassbender made his debut five years ago as the mutant villain in “X-Men: First Class” and again in “X-Men: Days of Future Past.”
The latest adventure in “X-Men: Apocalypse” is set in 1983 when an ancient mutant named Apocalypse awakens after thousands of years and is disillusioned with the world as he finds it.
Fassbender’s character is living a normal life in Poland until Apocalypse recruits him as part of his plan to take over the world.
When asked if the he was into comic books as a kid, Fassbender, 39, admitted he wasn’t much of a reader.
“I didn't read much at all as a kid much to my parents’ dismay,” he said. “My sister was a great reader -- she was reading coming out of the womb. She had a book in her hand, whereas I was kind of the opposite.”
It’s been a whirlwind year for Fassbender, who’s also starring in “The Light Between Oceans” and “Assassins Creed.”
“I think after this job, I'll take a little time off and get better at surfing,” he said.
