Michael Phelps Reveals He Actually Had Two Weddings
The Olympic swimmer wed Nicole Johnson in June and October.
-- Many fans were shocked when Michael Phelps revealed he kept his marriage to Nicole Johnson Phelps a secret for months.
But in fact, the Olympic swimmer had to keep two secrets as the pair celebrated their union with two ceremonies.
The couple opened up about their intimate June 13 wedding in Arizona and their October 29 wedding, held in Mexico.
Phelps, 31, and the former Miss California USA initially tied the knot in Tempe, Arizona, before the swimmer competed in the summer Olympics.
"On June 13, we look at it more like we signed our paperwork," Johnson Phelps, 31, told Brides magazine.
The Olympic gold medalist added that there were only five people in attendance at their backyard wedding. His bride said that in fact, the two "got married in sweats and jams."
Four months later, and after Phelps earned his 23rd gold medal, the couple along with family and friends celebrated their nuptials in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.
Johnson Phelps also revealed that their 7-month-old son, Boomer, played a very important role during the ceremony. He was the ring bearer.
The mother of one added that the ring hung "around his wrist and he was carried down the aisle by [eight-time Olympic medalist swimmer] Allison [Schmitt], our roommate."
In the interview with Brides magazine, Phelps then reflected on what it was like to watch his bride walk down the aisle.
"[I said,] 'Wow, now this is really happening,'" he recalled. "I made the joke to a friend of mine, 'Well, there’s no turning back now,' and he was like, 'Nope, you’re stuck, bro!' But a lot of my friends are really big smart a----, and we enjoy laughing and having fun."
The swimmer added that there was "also a little bit of tears of happiness as well" especially after "everything we've been through, we're finally at that point where we can make promises to each other."
