Miley Cyrus' MTV VMAs Date Jesse Helt Sentenced to Six Months in Jail for Violating Probation

— -- Jesse Helt, who accepted a MTV Video Music Award on behalf of Miley Cyrus then gave a touching speech on youth homelessness, received a six-month jail sentence today for violating his probation stemming from an arrest in 2010, the Associated Press reported.

Helt, 22, accepted Cyrus' award for video of the year for her song “Wrecking Ball" in late August. Then days after his speech, news of past arrests in Oregon and parole violations emerged.

Helt was arrested in 2010 for "criminal mischief," among other charges in his native Oregon and pleaded guilty/no contest to the charges, receiving probation. He violated that probation the next year and being in California for the VMAs two months ago was also a violation.

Helt turned himself in to authorities on Aug. 29 and posted bail, after a warrant was issued for his arrest.

Shortly after the awards show and news of Helt's past crimes, Cyrus tweeted about the incident.

Cyrus, 21, wrote "People who are homeless have lived very hard lives. Jesse included."

"I hope that this can be the start of a national conversation about youth homelessness and how to end it," she added.

Helt's mother also spoke to ABC News and said she was proud that he came home to turn himself in.

“I’m proud of him for doing what’s right,” she told ABC News. “I don’t condone running away from a problem.”
