She said songs like "Wrecking Ball" are "speaking to women and it's not because I went through a breakup -- I love Liam, Liam loves me and it's about finding yourself. ... I had to set myself free."

Cyrus and Hemsworth ended their engagement last September.

The singer said she had to be her own woman to be the person she is today.

"I think it's important for people to realize we all have our own lives and have to live them the way that's going to make us the happiest," she added.

As for her twerking and female empowerment.

"Everybody, at some point, had this kind of punk rock rebellion," she said. "Elvis was coming out and doing the OG twerking. ... No one would have called Elvis a slut because he wasn't a girl. ... The only thing I'm an example of is freedom."
