Miss America Savvy Shields on Winning the 2017 Crown: 'It's Not Coming Off'

“It’s like glued to my head. Are you kidding me?” Savvy Shields said on "GMA."

The moment Shields heard her name called as the winner of the highly esteemed competition, she couldn’t believe it.

“It was a dream. You dream of that moment since you’re 8 years old,” she said. “Whenever it does happen you’re not prepared for it, so you don’t really know how to react. I didn’t actually realize what I did until I saw the video. So thankfully I didn’t make that much of a fool of myself.”

The new Miss America’s full name is Savannah, “But the only person who calls me Savannah is my ballet teacher, because it’s classical,” she joked. “So everyone else in my life calls me Savvy.”

She credits the Miss America Organization for helping her continue her college career.

“Because of this organization I get to go to college debt-free,” said Shields. “Because of the Miss America Organization I have gotten over $90,000 for a scholarship.”

Shields, 21, is a student at the University of Arkansas.
