Nicholas Brendon Explains His Erratic Appearance on 'Dr. Phil'
"Buffy the Vampire Slayer" star walked off the set of show that aired Wednesday.
-- "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" star Nicholas Brendon offered a longer explanation for his erratic behavior on a recent episode of The Dr. Phil Show.
When host Phil McGraw brought up the troubled star's recent arrests and his traumatic childhood and accused the actor of showing up drunk, Brendon removed his mic and walked off the set.
The actor explained his actions in a long Facebook post Wednesday night.
"The night before the show taped, I got drunk. Drunk to the point I still smelled of it the following morning," he wrote, adding that he was "very stressed about doing the show."
Brendon also responded to the "hard words" Dr. Phil had for his mother, who did not put him into treatment after he was molested as a child.
"When I was molested as a child, it was 1982. Therapy wasn’t talked about and accepted the way it is today. Going to therapy in 1982 would be similar to getting a divorce in 1950," Brendon wrote. "It wasn’t done, and if it was, it wasn’t supported by those around you. There certainly were not the kind of resources that fortunately exist for abused children today. My mother, a victim of child abuse herself, was convinced by others that the best thing for me was to just put it behind us and move forward. My mother regrets this deeply, and it hurt me that Dr. Phil took her to task for not forcing me into treatment at the time."
Brendon went on to say that he is continuing treatment for his alcoholism and depression.
The actor has been arrested three times this year for intoxication and impairment and trashing his hotel rooms. He released a statement in June saying that he was entering rehab to treat his "depression, alcoholism and substance abuse problems."
The actor wasn't fully prepared to discuss those problems when he sat down with Dr. Phil last month.
After walking off the set mid-interview, he provided a brief explanation then.
"When I was in that seat, I felt that Dr. Phil went for the jugular, talking about some of my recent mistakes, with no build up. I felt that he wanted me to lay the darkest parts of myself on national TV right from the start, and I'm not willing to do that," Brendon wrote last month.
