Why Nicole Kidman and Naomi Watts Kissed On Stage in Shower Caps

Aussie actresses locked lips at a Hollywood event while wearing shower caps.

— -- Better late than never.

Earlier, Watts presented her good friend with the organization's Crystal Award for actresses who have helped expand the role of women and girls. Kidman has worked as a goodwill ambassador for the U.N. Development Fund for Women and as an advocate for the Women’s Cancer Program.

But the actress wasn't always so brave. Kidman recalled when she was 14-years-old being offered a role by then aspiring director Jane Campion to appear in her student film, "A Girls Own Story."

"I am horrified to report that I passed on the part she offered me," Kidman told the audience, according to E! News. "My excuse was that I had final exams to study for, but the truth is the part would have required me to appear up on the screen wearing a shower cap and kissing a girl...I wanted to be the kind of actress with long flowing hair [who] kissed boys."

She continued, "I was not ready to do the kind of work that threatened anybody. Well, today I know better and I say, 'Jane, if you're out there...I'm ready to don this cap."

Kidman then waved a shower cap in the air before continuing with her speech.

"Let's pledge together today to be there for that girl, to support her artistically, emotionally [and] financially," she said. "Let us create opportunities for her and teach her to manage that inner voice that is trying so hard everyday to hold her back. Let us show her that she is strong, smart and talented and she deserves every part that might interest her and at equal pay, too."

She ended her remarks with, "Let's stand tall and never ever apologize for it."

Then both Kidman and Watts slipped on shower caps and, to the delight of the audience, locked lips.
