-- HUGE SPOILERS AHEAD FOR 'Grey's Anatomy'
OK, you've been warned.
On Thursday night's episode of "Grey's Anatomy," Shonda Rhimes did something fans never thought she would go through with: She killed off Dr. Derek Shepherd, aka McDreamy, played by Patrick Dempsey.
After “McDreamy” stopped to help people injured in a crash, his own car was blindsided, and he later died at the hospital after his injuries were not properly diagnosed.
He spoke to Entertainment Weekly about the show that made him a star and whether he saw this coming.
"It really was something that was kind of surprising that unfolded, and it just naturally came to be. Which was pretty good. I like the way it has all played out," he said. "Things happened very quickly, where we were like, 'Oh this is where it’s going to go.' It just sort of unfolded in a very organic way. I don’t remember the date ... Maybe February or March."
He added, "Shepherd is a beloved character. People don’t want to lose him ... But it goes on, and it will evolve."
Dempsey added that he wasn't all that surprised and thought it was the "right time."
Did he cry after more than a decade on the show?
"No. I’m still processing it. This is part of the mourning process, the post-'Grey’s' experience," he said, adding he didn't grab anything from the set
The 49-year-old actor said it was "wild" the way the show changed his life.
"You go from trying to get in a room to audition for something to suddenly everybody in the world knowing you, no matter where you go. And it happened within a 30-day period. I’m glad I had the experience to handle it, because it’s very heady," he added.
He even teared up a bit when talking about his wife on the show, Ellen Pompeo.
"It’s 10 years, and it was magic from the beginning,” he said. “Chemistry right away.”
