Pink Thinks Jameson Is a Cool Boy's Name

Nov. 30, 2010— -- Celebrities are notorious for their imaginative approaches to child-naming, but Pink's announcement about monikers has even fans scratching their head.

The singer, who is pregnant with her first child, and her husband Carey Hart, told Access Hollywood that, if it's a boy, one name on their list is Jameson.

"My dad's name is James and my brother's name is Jason," Pink told Access, noting that both she and Hart are both Irish, and that her husband's middle name is Jason.

But she also said that she and Hart both like whiskey. "That's a no brainer," she said.

The alcohol-amniotic fluid combination has set some tongues wagging.

Hollyscoop.com's Emma Collins prefaced her comments with the headline: "So Does This Mean Pink's Son is Going to be an Alcoholic?"

"Being sober for nine months sounds like it's going to be a big problem for Pink," wrote Collins. "She can't seem to get alcohol off her mind so she figures, why not name my unborn child after one?!"

But on the Celebrity Baby Blog at CelebrityBabies.com, the focus wasn't on alcohol. Many of the more than 100 comments not only focused on the suitability of the name Jameson for both boys and girls, but offered other naming suggestions and stated the origins of their own names.

Why such an intense interest in the names celebs imprint on their kids?

"The U.S. doesn't have a monarchy, so the only aristocracy here is the celebrity," said Michael Sherrod, an internet publisher and the author of "Bad Baby Names: The Worst True Names Parents Saddled Their Kids With, and Now You Can Too."

"We treat celebrities like the royal family, and so fans think, 'this celebrity belongs to us and, by extension, so does their baby,'" he said.

Sherrod believes that celebrities wrongly get singled out for the names they pick. "Many times celebrities who are famous, gave unusual names to their kids so that the children could carve out distinct identities," he said. "The celebrity didn't want their child to live in his or her shadow."

Of course, noted Sherrod, some people go to an extreme, naming their children after diseases and tools. "Throughout history, people have given children names to make a point, such as using 'Danger' as a middle name," he said.

Is all the hoopla surrounding weird monikers worth it?

Sherrod said some studies have revealed that people with unusual names didn't like them as youngsters. However, as adults, they approved of them. "It made them stand out," he said. "It was a peg to put their identities on."
