Prince's Autopsy to Determine Cause of Death Is Complete
A full report, including toxicology, could take weeks, a press release stated.
-- One day after Prince Rogers Nelson was pronounced dead at the age of 57, the chief medical examiner for the Midwest Medical Examiner's office performed an autopsy on the music legend to determine the cause of death.
The autopsy began at 9 a.m. CT and was completed at 1 p.m., a press release from the medical examiner's office said. The singer's body would be returned to his family later today, the release said.
A full report, including toxicology, could "likely take weeks," according to the release.
"As part of a complete exam, relevant information regarding Mr. Nelson’s medical and social history will be gathered. Anything which could be relevant to the investigation will be taken into consideration," the medical examiner's office said earlier.
The autopsy comes amid further details of an emergency landing last week involving Prince's plane at Quad City International Airport in Moline, Illinois. Jeff Patterson, the airport's fire chief, told ABC News it received a call about an inbound aircraft carrying an “unresponsive person.”
Prince was rushed to a local hospital after the landing, where he was treated for the flu, his rep confirmed to ABC News.
Late last night, the Carver County Sheriff’s office released the 911 call made from Prince's Paisley Park residence in Minnesota on Thursday morning.
The caller, noticeably shaken, said, "We're at Prince's house."
Prince was pronounced dead at 10:07 a.m. after first responders attempted CPR. His publicist later confirmed to the public that the music icon had died at his home.
"It is with profound sadness that I am confirming that the legendary iconic performer, Prince, has died at his Paisley Park residence this morning at the age of 57," his publicist Yvette Noel-Schure said in a statement. "There are no further details as to the cause of his death at this time."
