QVC Host, Fashion Designer Can’t Decide Whether the Moon Is a Planet or a Star (It’s Neither)

— -- A QVC pitch for printed cardigans progressed to an unlikely but vigorous debate about whether the moon is a planet or a star.

It happened during a segment to sell cardigans by designer Isaac Mizrahi. The designer himself and QVC host Shawn Killinger were describing the various colors in which the garment is available when Killinger remarked that one of the colors put her in the mind of “the planet moon.”

What followed was a debate during which Killinger questioned whether the moon could also be a star (it isn't), asked whether the sun was a star (it is), and Mizrahi said the moon was a planet (no, it's not).

The exchange has made the two the focus of many jokes online. The video, posted to YouTube on Monday, had been viewed more than 58,000 times as of Thursday night.

Here’s part of the illuminating exchange that follows Killinger’s description of the cardigan:

Killinger: “It kinda looks like what the Earth looks like when you’re a bazillion miles away from the planet moon, the planet moon, from the moon.”

Mizrahi: “From the planet moon. From the planet moon.”

Killinger: “Isn’t the moon a star?”

Mizrahi: “No, the moon is a planet, darling.”

Killinger: “Isn’t the moon a star? The sun is a star. Is the moon really a planet?”

Mizrahi: “The moon is a planet, honey, it’s a planet.”

Killinger: “Don’t look at me like that. The sun is a star. Is this sun not a star?”

Mizrahi: “I don’t know what the sun is.”

A model, wearing one of Mizrahi’s creations and standing on the set, covers her face. Mizrahi asks for someone to Google the answer, and the debate continues while they wait.

Killinger: “I knew it! The moon is not a planet. I knew it!”

Mizrahi: “The moon is such a planet, I can’t even stand it. What else is it if it’s not a planet?”

Killinger: “It is not. I believe it’s a star or something.”

Mizrahi: “It’s a moon, it's a moon.”

Mizrahi: “I don’t know. ... What is it a baseball or something? What is it, cheese? C’mon, it’s a planet”

When someone supplies them with the correct answer -- the moon is a natural satellite -- Killinger’s reaction is: “The moon is what? The moon is a natural satellite? What’s that mean?”

Mizrahi adds: “Things live on it. That means it’s a planet. I don’t know.”
