Robin Thicke Says 'Back Together' Not About Ex Paula Patton

— -- Robin Thicke is back on the music scene with the new single “Back Together,” but the singer says people should not read too deeply into the song’s title for clues about his personal life.

“I just heard this idea of getting back together and getting yourself back together and, you know, what I was going through at the time I really related to that and connected with it,” Thicke said today on "Good Morning America." “It’s more about the theme of getting yourself back together with love and partnership.”

Thicke added that he did not write the song, so he “can’t take credit for the meaning,” he said.

“Back Together,” which features a verse from Nicki Minaj, is Thicke’s second single since his divorce from ex-wife Paula Patton, the mother of his 5-year-old son, and a $7.4 million ruling against him and Pharrell Williams.

In March, a jury ruled that Thicke, 38, and Williams copied parts of Marvin Gaye's "Got to Give It Up" to make their hit "Blurred Lines,” and awarded the $7.4 million in damages to Gaye’s family.

Thicke’s legal team is appealing the decision so he is not able to discuss specifics of the case, but Thicke had a message for his fans.

“Just to say thank you for all the love and support over the last year because everybody goes through ups and downs but it’s nice when people stick by you and send you lots of love to help you get through it,” Thicke said.

Thicke, the son of “Growing Pains” star Alan Thicke, says he coped with the divorce and the lawsuit by taking time off and going on a “magical trip” with his son, Julian, and mom, the singer Gloria Loring.

“I started songwriting and producing and singing professionally when I was 16 and I never really stopped until last year,” Thicke, 38, said. “Then I took some time off to just be with my son and my family and it helps you gain perspective on what’s important in life.

“I just finally took a few months off or more and spent a lot of time with my parents even, talking with them, getting their advice,” he added. “I always kind of grew up thinking I knew what I was doing and then when you have some tough times, you call on your parents, you call on your grandfather for advice.

“I spent so much time with my son and that just made me realize what’s most important,” Thicke added.

Thicke’s still-untitled eighth album is due out this fall. His first single from the album, “Morning Sun,” was his 11th Top 10 song in the Hot Urban AC Charts.

The singer is dating 20-year-old model April Geary Love.
