Sam Smith Wins the Grammy He Wanted the Most
The "Stay With Me" singer was up for six awards and won four.
-- Going into this Sunday night's Grammy Awards, Sam Smith had a whopping six nominations and won an impressive four awards.
Smith took home Grammys for Song of the Year and Record of the Year, but neither of those were the one that meant the most to the soul singer.
The "Stay With Me" singer told the Los Angeles Times that he really wanted to win Best New Artist because "you can only win that once" -- and that's just what the 22-year-old did.
"The things me and my team have accomplished on a first record is so amazing," he added. "It takes my breath away, and getting new artist would really highlight that."
In fact, when he took home the award for Best New Artist, Smith admitted he was "trying not to cry."
After he won the final and biggest award for Record of the Year, Smith thanked that former love that inspired all these awards and all these heart-felt songs. "Thanks for breaking my heart, because now I have four Grammys," he added.
In addition to leading the way with four awards, Smith performed "Stay With Me" during the telecast with the legendary Mary J. Blige.
