Five 'Opposite' Couples: Some Lasted, Some Crashed and Burned

The theory that opposites attract may not be the whole truth.

March 22, 2010— -- Women like bad boys.

This can be scientifically proven, according to Rachel Sussman, a relationship expert currently writing the "The Ultimate Break-up Book for Women."

"Women are naturally attracted to men with the highest testosterone," Sussman told ABCNews.com. "That has been a part of women's DNA since the beginning of time. Women are attracted to very bad, very macho boys, and it might be great sex. But they don't make the best boyfriends -- or the best husbands."

This is a hard fact that Sandra Bullock has spent the past several days internalizing as the news broke that her own bad boy husband, celebrity mechanic Jesse James, may have cheated while she was filming her Oscar-winning role in "The Blind Side."

"Opposites do attract, but they don't necessarily work out in the long term," Sussman said. "Research shows that couples have the best marriages when they have the most things in common and are more similar than different."

Despite that, some opposites attract and even have a very serious and faithful relationship.

Here is a look at five famous couples in which opposites attracted. Two help bolster Sussman's theory, but three are counterintuitively thriving.

Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie Presley

On paper it sounded good – the king of pop and the princess of rock-n-roll – but in reality the relationship was a mess.

Twenty days after Lisa Marie Presley's divorce from her first husband, she married Michael Jackson in the Dominican Republic. The pair first met at a Jackson 5 concert when Presley was seven and Jackson was 17. In 1993, they met again through mutual friends and after four months of courting, Jackson proposed over the phone.

The pair began a very public relationship, famously including the famous kiss that Jackson planted on Presley when he opened the 1994 Video Music Awards. Presley also starred in the music video for Jackson's, "You Are Not Alone" wearing only a towel around her waist for most of the video.

The marriage lasted less than two years, but after Jackson's death, Presley wrote on her MySpace page that "Our relationship was not 'a sham' as is being reported in the press. I do believe he loved me as much as he could love anyone and I loved him very much."

Heidi Klum and Seal

One of the world's most famous models and a singer whose face has been scarred by a skin disease? Not exactly a match made in high-fashion heaven.

Nor did the couple get off to the most auspicious start. Seal met Klum just after she had ended a relationship with race car driver Flavor Baritone, and announced that she was pregnant with Baritone's child.

One year after they met, Seal proposed to Klum in an igloo he had built on top of a snowcapped glacier in Vancouver, Canada. When Klum gave birth to her ex's baby, Seal was the one holding her hand through the pushes. Since then the couple has had three children within four years.

The couple have also prospered in their careers. Klum produces and hosts her mega-hit reality show "Project Runway" as Seal has released and toured behind three albums.

Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez

'Beniffer,' as the couple was known in their prime, met in 2002 after both had left serious relationships. Affleck dated Gwyneth Paltrow in the late-90's and J Lo had come off a two-year relationship with Sean 'P. Diddy' Combs – it was a classic case of good guy wanting the 'dangerous' bad girl and the bad girl trying to clean up her act.

A wedding, planned for September of 2004, was canceled hours before it was to begin.

In a 2007 Details magazine interview, Affleck said that dating J Lo "was probably bad for his career."

"What happens is this sort of bleed-over from the tabloids across your movie work," Affleck told Details. "I ended up in an unfortunate crosshair position where I was in a relationship and [the media] mostly lied and inflated a bunch of stuff for the sake of selling magazines. And I paid a certain price for that."

The movies the pair starred in while dating -- remember "Gigli" and "Jersey Girl"? -- bombed at the box-office.

This story does have a happy ending though; both Affleck and J Lo met their current spouses soon after the engagement was called off.

Courtney Cox and David Arquette

The original cougar couple, Cox and Arquette met on the set of "Scream" in 1996 when Arquette played Cox's love interest. Cox was seven years older than Arquette, who was 25 when the trilogy began filming. After completing the movie, the couple were inseparable and got married in the summer of 1999.

At the beginning of the marriage the differences in their personalities became evident. Arquette was a wild, twenty-something in Hollywood and Cox was in her early thirties and looking to settle down.

Cox was still playing Monica on NBC's "Friends" opposite Matthew Perry (Chandler). Her personal life eerily began to imitate Monica's when she and Arquette had the same problem as Monica and Chandler: They couldn't get pregnant. While filming the last two seasons of Friends, Cox was herself receiving in vitro treatments.

When Monica finally got pregnant with Chandler's child, Cox herself became pregnant. On June 13, 2004, she gave birth to their first child, daughter Coco Cox Arquette -- and is by all accounts still going strong with Arquette.

Celine Dion and Rene Angelil

He lived through the end of the Second World War and she was born at the beginning of disco's reign.

In 1993, when Dion had just begun to become popular in the United States, she made the announcement that her manager, Rene Angelil, had also become her lover.

A year later, the pop star and her manager, 26 years her senior, tied the knot live on Canadian television in an extravagant ceremony with 530 of the couple's closest friends.

After more records and her biggest hit to date, "My Heart Will Go On," Dion took a break to start a family. After a year of trying, Dion finally became pregnant. She gave birth to son, Rene-Charles in January of 2001. During the time she was pregnant, Angelil went through a serious bout of throat cancer, but has since been declared healthy.

She then returned to music with her three-year, sold-out show "A New Day" at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. Dion had become pregnant again in August of 2009 but lost the baby two months later and is currently still trying to have another child.

These two opposites have one factor working in their favor – her career is his career. When you both literally depend on each other to bring home the bacon, career jealousy, a factor that breaks-up many couples, doesn't come into play.
