Singer Jewel and Husband Ty Murray Divorcing
"We truly believe we can find greater happiness apart than together," she said.
-- Jewel made a very difficult "personal announcement" today.
"My husband, friend and partner of 16 years and I have decided to get a divorce," she wrote on her blog. "Ty and I have always tried to live the most authentic life possible, and we wanted our separation as husband and wife to be nothing less loving than the way we came together."
The "Foolish Games" singer added, "For some time we have been engaged in a private and difficult, but thoughtful and tender undoing of ourselves. Allowing ourselves the time and space to redefine what we are to each other with love rather than malice."

Jewel, 40, and Murray, 44, married in 2008 and their son Kase was born on July 11, 2011.
"Oddly the very thing that Ty and I sought in coming together is the very thing we seek in separating. We both value growth," she wrote. "And growth became tragically and undeniably stifled as a couple, and we believe we can find it again in setting each other free. We truly believe we can find greater happiness apart than together, and this is why we are taking the enormous and heartbreaking step of divorce."
Jewel and Murray added a joint statement in the post that they will continue to work together for the well-being of their son.
“Our dedication to our son is unwavering and we are both committed to being the best partners in raising our son. Due to the spirit in which we have gone about this separation, we trust we can remain dear friends who hold each other in high esteem, which is so important to us as parents -- as we wish only what is best for our son,” the couple said.
ABC News spoke to Jewel in April and she was hesitant to say a second child was coming.
"It hasn't happened yet ... we'll see," she said of having another child, adding she feels like her "eggs are in wheelchairs" at the moment.
She added that Kase, who turns 3 next week, has been with her a lot while she works.
"He's been in the studio with me quite a bit lately and he enjoys it," she said. "If I'm not singing he can be in my lap and I can play with him. Between takes, he can run around the studio."
