Will Smith Says Jared Leto Never Broke Character in 'Suicide Squad'
He said he was always the Joker, he never met the actor!
-- Will Smith says Jared Leto never broke character while filming "Suicide Squad" earlier this year.
Smith, 47, said the actor, who has gone method before for movies, was always in character and always the Joker. In fact, Smith, who plays Deadshot in "Squad," said he never met the man himself.
"I’ve never actually met Jared Leto," he told Beats 1's Zane Lowe. "We worked together for six months and we’ve never exchanged a word outside of ‘Action’ and ‘Cut!’ We've never said 'Hello' ... I've only spoken to him as Deadshot and as him as The Joker."
He continued, "So, the first time I see him will be ‘Hey, Jared. What’s up?’ [and] 'Hey, Will, how you doing, nice to meet you?' ... Not a single word exchanged off camera. He was all in on the Joker ... I'm looking forward to meeting him."
Leto, 43, is known to do this. Last year, producers on the Oscar-winning "Dallas Buyers Club" told ABC News that they never met Leto until award season. He was his character Rayon through the entire shoot. A method that won the actor a slew of awards, including an Oscar.
Smith, on the other hand, also spoke about his comeback in music for the first time in a decade and past films that weren't so well received like "Squad" is expected to be.
"I'm at the beginning of this process, shaking the rust off," the former rapper told Lowe about getting back into music.
He added about films like 2013's "After Earth," which he laughed off and said was one of the first times "I had a massive, public ... a thoroughly and completely accepted failure."
Smith, who also has "Concussion" coming out soon, said failure is something that has to happen and it's best to "fail forward."
"I'm feeling really good about this time in my career," he added.
"Suicide Squad" comes out in August 2016.
