Sports Illustrated to Have Covers for Every Single Member of US Women's Soccer Team
Sports Illustrated to publish 24 covers featuring individual team members.
-- The upcoming issue of Sports Illustrated magazine will feature 24 covers for the players of the U.S. Women’s national soccer team, the magazine announced today.
When the issue hits newsstands Wednesday, there will be one cover for each member and head coach Jill Ellis. The team won its third Women’s World Cup in Canada last week.
The newsstand cover will be randomly distributed nationwide, while subscribers will receive separate covers featuring Carli Lloyd, Alex Morgan, Julie Johnston, Abby Wambach, Megan Rapinoe and Becky Sauerbrunn, the magazine said today in a news release.
The magazine’s managing editor, Chris Stone, said the publication wanted to do something different for the cover featuring the team. A team shot seemed “a little conventional,” so the magazine went with “something different and fresh,” he said, adding, “Each player deserves her own cover. That's what we settled on."
The covers were shot throughout one day in New York City, with each team member holding the World Cup Championship trophy.
