Judge Approves Fonda Divorce
May 22, 2001 -- Ten years of marriage between actress Jane Fonda and media mogul Ted Turner came to an end today, when a Georgia judge granted Fonda's divorce request.
"I feel sadness," Fonda said in a statement issued by her attorney, John C. Mayoue. "We shared 10 years together, and I will always care for him. Now it's time to move on, and I wish him well."
In an April filing in Fulton County Superior Court in Atlanta, Fonda noted that the couple's marriage was "irretrievably broken" and that "there is no hope of reconciliation." That language is typical under Georgia divorce laws, according to The Associated Press.
Fonda, 63, petitioned for divorce shortly after 62-year-old Turner commented to The New Yorker that his wife's newfound Christianity caused a rift in their relationship. Fonda retaliated by telling the magazine that Turner is a needy man who doesn't understand love.
"He needs someone to be there 100 percent of the time. He thinks that's love. It is not love. It's babysitting," Fonda said. "… We went in different directions. I grew up."
This was the third marriage for both Fonda and Turner.
