TV Notes: NBC Launches 'Weakest Link'

April 16, 2001 -- Ready to hear TV's newest catch phrase? Yes? No? Is that your final answer? OK, here goes: "You are the weakest link. Goodbye."

NBC has high hopes for the Weakest Link, premiering tonight, with Anne Robinson serving as host. It's part Survivor, part Who Wants to be a Millionaire and part traditional game show. A British version of the show is already an enormous hit.

Players work as a team in pursuit of a million-dollar prize. After each round, the players vote one of their own off the show. Sound familiar? It's at that point Robinson intones, "You are the weakest link. Goodbye."

"At its most basic, when you've seen it a couple of times, it's a bit like a car crash," Robinson says. "You know, you shouldn't be watching but you can't stop."

Weakest Link takes the time slot previously held by the disasterous Titans and First Years. Other episodes will air Tuesday and Wednesday.

Male View

It's time for another View.

A show touted as a male version of ABC's The View is coming to NBC this fall. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Mario Lopez (Slater from Saved by the Bell) will serve as one of the hosts of The Other Half.

Other hosts on this five-man panel include Partridge Family alum Danny Bonaduce, geriatric teenager Dick Clark, and Dr. Jan Adams.

Bridges Over Troubled Waters

Former Diff'rent Strokes star Todd Bridges is being hailed as a hero after pulling a paraplegic woman out of a lake in California's San Fernando Valley.

Stella Kline said her wheelchair became entangled in her fishing line, and she rolled into the water. Bridges, 35, who was there with some friends, jumped in and saved her.

"Everybody's been saying nothing but bad stuff about Todd Bridges on the news and in the papers," Kline, 50, said. "He has a heart of gold."

Bridges has been in and out of trouble with the law since his show was cancelled. In 1990, he was acquitted on charges of assault with a deadly weapon after he allegedly shot a crack dealer.

"We felt God put us there at the right time to save this lady's life, because there was no one else around," he said.
