Film Notes: Keanu Reeves' Girlfriend Killed

April 5, 2001 -- Keanu Reeves' estranged girlfriend was killed when her Jeep Cherokee careened onto the wrong side of a Los Angeles road and smashed into three parked cars.

The force of Monday's crash flipped the car over and Jennifer Syme was thrown through the windshield. She was killed instantly.

Syme, 29, reportedly was being treated for depression and taking two prescription drugs, which police found in the car. They said they also found two rolled-up dollar bills with traces of a white powder that's being tested.

This is just the latest tragedy for Reeves. In 1999, Symes gave birth to the couple's stillborn daughter.

A friend of The Matrix startold the New York Post that "Keanu is heartbroken — he's in pain. He and Jennifer were extremely close."

Reeves is currently in seclusion and his publicist said he had no comment.

Spider Problems

More problems on the set of Spider-Man: Zach Hudson, stunt double for Tobey Maguire, who plays the webbed wonder, fractured his leg Tuesday in a stunt gone awry.

Hudson was supposed to fly into a brick wall before scraping against a second wall, but he accidentally crashed into the second wall. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment. His condition is unknown, nor is it known whether the blunder will hold up the film's production.

But that was only the beginning of the web of problems the production experienced this week. A spokesman for Columbia Pictures said Wednesday that four costumes are missing. The studio is offering a $25,000 reward for the outfits.

Last month, a worker on the set died in a construction accident. Barring further catastrophe, the film is expected to be released in May of next year.
