Eminem Works Out Divorce Deal
March 20, 2001 -- Eminem's mouth isn't the only thing moving quickly for the rap superstar these days; he's also just turned around a remarkably speedy agreement in the split from his wife, Kim.
The couple's temporary agreement — which gives them joint custody of 5-year-old daughter Hailie Jade — came just 11 days after Kimberly Mathers filed for divorce on March 1, in Macomb, Mich., County Circuit Court, following a two-month attempt at a reconciliation.
The agreement, worked out last week, will give the Grammy Award-winning rapper the couple's $450,000 home in the exclusive Clinton Township. The soon-to-be-former Mrs. Mathers will receive a settlement of $475,000 in cash to purchase her own pad.
Eminem's attorney, Harvey Hauer, told The Detroit News that the negotiations between the two were "not contentious at all."
"It was easily arrived at because each person was concerned with the family and concerned with the well-being of their daughter," he added.
Kim and Eminem, whose real name is Marshall Mathers III, were married in June 1999. Eminem filed for divorce from his wife back in August, but in December the couple announced that they had reconciled for the sake of their daughter.
