Drew Barrymore's Home Damaged by Fire
February 18, 2001 -- Drew Barrymore and her fiancé, Canadian comic Tom Green, escaped uninjured from an early morning fire that badly damaged the actress's Los Angeles home, Reuters reports.
Barrymore and Green were home at the time but escaped unharmed, according to local news reports. "We're great," Barrymore told reporters at the scene.
"Other than the fact that the home burned down," the typically sarcastic Green added.
Damage to the two-story, 3,500-square-foot home, located in a hilly area north of Beverly Hills, was estimated at $700,000, Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Jim Wells told Reuters. In a clip shown on various TV news stations, Barrymore, holding her head in her hand, moaned that they had lost everything.
The couple might not have been able to escape the fire if not for their dog, Flossie. The trusty canine woke them up around 3:30 a.m. by barking and clawing at their bedroom door, Barrymore's rep told The Associated Press.
The blaze took some 60 firefighters nearly an hour to extinguish, Wells said. The cause of the fire was under investigation, according to the fire department.
