Cary Grant Honored With Statue in Britain
Jan. 16, 2001 -- The English city of Bristol is weighingplans to honor one of its favorite sons, the debonair actorCary Grant, with a statue and commemorative festival.
"A statue has been proposed and we are considering theplans now," a spokesman for Bristol city council said Monday."I fully expect the project will be approved."
Grant, born Archibald Leach in Bristol in 1904, leftBritain in the 1920s to find fame in Hollywood. He starred innearly 100 films, including Arsenic and Old Lace and Northby Northwest, but never lost traces of his distinctiveaccent.
A celebration of the actor's life is planned for Septemberwith special screenings of his films and various exhibitions onhis life and storied acting career.
Grant, a regular visitor to Bristol during his life, diedin 1986.
