Thanksgiving Movie Preview

Nov. 16, 2000 -- Hollywood once again dishes up a slew of Thanksgiving films. Here is a guide to help you keep away from the wrong kind of turkeys:

The 6th Day (Nov. 17) Get your pet cloned. It’s as easy as ordering a pizza in this futuristic action thriller from director Roger Spottiswoode (Tomorrow Never Dies). Arnold Schwarzenegger plays a happily married guy who gets accidentally cloned and has to deal with a new kind of significant other. The cast also includes Michael Rappaport, and Robert Duvall as the scientist illegally cloning humans on the sly.

Bounce (Nov. 17)

Their off-screen relationship has gone kaput, but Gwyneth Paltrow and Ben Affleck at least have the chance to play fictional lovers in this romantic comedy. Paltrow is a suburban mom dealing with the loss of her husband in a plane crash. Affleck is there to help her out. Trouble is, he’s partly to blame for her husband’s death.

Unbreakable (Nov. 22)Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson team up in this thriller from The Sixth Sense creator M.Night Shyamalan. Willis is pondering life when his train crashes. Miraculously, he emerges without a scratch, the sole survivor. How? Jackson offers up a supernatural explanation.

For the Kids

Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas (Nov. 17)You’re a marketable one, Mr. Grinch. You can bet your undersized, puke-green heart that the kids will be clamoring for those product tie-ins. How about McWhoville Happy Meals. With rubber man Jim Carrey in the title role and Anthony Hopkins reading the good doctor’s rhymes, Director Ron Howard gets off to a good start. But this is a movie derived from a cartoon derived from a children’s book. What will get lost — or unnecessarily added to — in the translation.

Rugrats in Paris: The Movie (Nov. 17) Chuckie, Angelica, Tommy and the gang are on a mission in the land of brie: Find Chuckie a new mommy. Susan Sarandon and John Lithgow lend their voices as the ever-popular babies embark on their second film adventure.

102 Damlatians (Nov. 22)More dogs = more fun. That’s Disney’s theory for this sequel to the 1996 blockbuster. The pups are in Paris minding their own business until danger strikes. The sinister yet fashionable Cruella De Vil (Glenn Close) resumes her quest to create a Dalmatian coat, with Gerard Depardieu playing the fashion designer sidekick.
