Wynonna Judd's Garage Sale

L E I P E R S   F O R K, Tenn. Aug. 26,, 2000 -- A garage sale on a summer weekend usually doesn’t make national news, but the one in Leipers Fork, Tenn., is an exception.

It’s at the estate of country music star Wynonna Judd.

Judd is moving, so she’s getting rid of a few things she doesn’twant anymore — such as tiger lily-colored hair dye and half a tentfull of Christmas decorations.

Other items include stage clothing, shoes, books, furniture,appliances, a restored 1949 Ford pickup truck, and a 1992maroon-and-chrome Harley-Davidson Heritage Softtail motorcycle. Fans and profiteers gleefully picked through country music star’s discarded things Friday as she prepared to move with a garage sale.

“I’m hoping she and Ashley [Judd, Wynonna’s actress sister]played it,” said Cindy Smith of Franklin, holding a worn box ofthe game Yahztee she planned to purchase for $5. She also plannedto buy some of Wynonna’s hair dye fora friend.

A steady stream of cars trickled in and out of Judd’s estatesouth of Nashville, and pickings were already getting slim afterthe first few hours of the sale. It was scheduled to run throughSunday.

Cleaning Out and Moving On

“She’s sold the house and is building her dream house on 500acres she owns next to where her mother and sister live down theroad,” said Kerry Hansen, Wynonna’s spokeswoman. “Meanwhile,she’ll be living in a smaller house that has no room for most ofthis stuff.

“She knows a lot of neighbors might want some of the stuff.That’s just the way she is.”

Fans and the curious came, lured by bargains and star power.They found merchandise under a tent, in stables and the sun room ofthe home. They learned the following about the 36-year-old singer,who has scored solo hits like “No One Else on Earth” and is partof The Judds duo with mother Naomi Judd.

She is a board game player. Besides Yahztee, worn boxes ofScattergories, Scruples and other games were being sold.

She’s big on self-help and spiritual books. Among the titles forsale were The 12 Stages of Healing, The Heart of Healing and Ask Your Angels.

She considers many diet and exercise options. A full-body steamsauna was for sale, as were healthy recipe books and a Buns ofSteel video tape.

She’s big on Christmas. Nearly half of the tent was devoted todecorations and Christmas tree lights.

From Wynonna’s House to eBay

Jim McCann, of Springfield, Ill., heard about the sale as he waspassing through on the way to vacation in Orlando, Fla. He bought akaraoke machine for $5.

“Who NEEDS a karaoke machine?” he laughed. “I bought itbecause it’s HER karaoke machine.”

Jennifer Deibler of Franklin picked up a juicer for $25. Shesaid she would get no special thrill because it had been owned by astar, but considered it a bargain.

“I liked some of the shoes, but they were $200 to $500,”Deibler said. “Maybe I’ll come back later and see if they’remarked down.”

David McCracken of Nashville came prepared to spend $300. Hespent twice that much, buying an armful of stage dresses, andpackages of false eyelashes.

“I bought some gifts for friends,” he said. “I consider itearly Christmas shopping.”

McCracken said he hoped to break even by selling some of hispurchases over the Internet.

“There will be some stuff on eBay pretty soon,” he said.
