Did Britney Go to Rehab?
Feb. 16, 2007 -- The Britney Spears phenomenon appears to have come full circle.
The scandal-plagued singer, whose meteoric rise to fame has been mirrored by a just-as-dramatic public decline, reportedly checked herself into and out of rehab this week.
After checking into rehab at Eric Clapton's Crossroads facility in Antigua, Spears reportedly refused to stay and checked out a day later, according to People.com.
"I cannot confirm or deny the presence of any of our patients," a Crossroads staff member told ABCNEWS.com.
According to "Extra," the syndicated TV show, Spears entered rehab at the urging of friends and family who were increasingly concerned about her excessive partying and drinking.
Swamped with phone calls from reporters, most of Spears' team of publicists, managers and lawyers weren't responding, leaving the public in the dark about the true story behind the pop star's condition.
Since Spears' well-publicized divorce from husband Kevin Federline in November, Spears has been photographed and videotaped in compromising positions -- not wearing underwear in the back of a limousine, stumbling drunk through nightclubs.
Spears' former assistant was so concerned about her recent behavior that she wrote her an e-mail saying that the 25-year-old star is headed for "rock bottom."
"I cherish ALL the incredible opportunities that came my way thru my job with Britney and am crushed/saddened/heart sick by the way her life is unfolding," reads the e-mail from Culotta, posted this week on ThatOtherBlog on the Hollywood.com Web site.
"I want you to know Ruben that WE (as in her Family and nearest and dearest -- ALL of whom are not on the payroll anymore!!) are doing EVERYTHING in our power to get help for Britney," writes Culotta, who says she worked for Spears for nearly 10 years.
Spears' current and former publicists, agents and lawyers did not return calls for comment.
