Lindsay Back in Rehab After Lost Weekend

May 30, 2007 — -- After a Memorial Day weekend from hell, Lindsay Lohan has checked back into rehab. For the second time this year.

According to a statement released by the 20-year-old actress' publicist, Leslie Sloane Zelnick, Lohan "admitted herself to an intensive medical rehabilitation facility" Monday. In Touch Online, In Touch magazine's Web site, says Lohan is a patient at Promises Residential Treatment Center in Malibu, Calif.

The return to rehab comes after a three-day span in which she was arrested on suspicion of DUI after crashing her car in Los Angeles -- the latest installment in the hard-partying actress' headline-making personal life.

According to In Touch, "a close friend" reports that after the difficulties of the last few days, Lohan "finally realizes it is the right thing to do."

At the beginning of this year, Lohan voluntarily checked into Wonderland, a West Hollywood center for the treatment of drug and alcohol abuse.

During her time there, Lohan was granted frequent "day passes" and was often photographed away from the facility, shopping and socializing with friends at bars and restaurants.

Promises is a very expensive facility which reportedly features the fine food, high-thread-count linens and private masseuses more often associated with a first-class resort than a rehab center. Britney Spears spent some time at Promises after a hair-shaving incident in March.

The Lost Weekend

Lohan's decision to retry rehab may not come as a surprise given the upheaval of the Memorial Day weekend -- memorable it was, but not in a good way.

Her difficulties began early Saturday morning when she jumped the roadside curb in her Mercedes convertible, crashing into a small stand of trees on Sunset Boulevard.

The accident followed what was reportedly a long night of partying. Lohan was treated at a local hospital for minor injuries and then given a misdemeanor DUI citation.

But things may get more serious; police searching the damaged vehicle found cocaine.

"The investigators are continuing to follow up their leads, and additional charges may be filed in this case," said Lt. Mitch McCann of the Beverly Hills Police Department at a weekend press conference.

Currently Lohan is scheduled to appear in court on Aug 24.

More Party Photos After the Crash

Less than 48 hours after the car crash -- as Memorial Day dawned early Monday morning -- Lohan apparently returned to Hollywood's party circuit.

Pictures snapped by the omnipresent celebrity photographers of the Los Angeles photo agency X17 (X17online.com) show a zombie-like Lohan in an SUV reportedly being driven by a friend.

The photos show Lohan being helped from her knees into a club at the Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood -- the setting for a Memorial Day pool party. In photos reportedly taken two hours later she appears barely conscious in the passenger's seat as her friend tries to rouse her.

Visible through the windshield are several "chips" dangling from their chains around the rearview mirror, one reading: "30 Days. One Day At A Time." The chips are the medallions signifying sobriety from Alcoholics Anonymous.

Last December, Lohan claimed to have been attending AA meetings for most of 2006.

Several weeks ago the British tabloid "News Of The World" published still photos from a video allegedly showing Lohan and two friends using cocaine in the bathroom of the Roosevelt Hotel.

The video was allegedly taken by a "friend" of Lohan's.

Lohan's Father Recommends More Rehab

Michael Lohan, Lindsay's father, will no doubt be pleased if the reports of his daughter's return to rehab are true. He told the New York Post on Sunday that Lindsay needs more help.

"The writing was on the wall years ago," Lohan told the paper. "She needs to go [to rehab], and my ex-wife should go with her."

Lindsay's mother Dina Lohan, a former Rockette, has often been seen out partying with her daughter, even in the wake of Lindsay's first stint in rehab last January.

But the talented ingénue's mother defended the lifestyle in an interview with Harper's Bazaar magazine earlier this year. Dinah Lohan claims she herself is "living the American Dream."

Michael Lohan -- who just completed a two-year jail sentence on DUI and assault charges -- blames the company Lindsay keeps for much of her trouble.

In a video interview posted on YouTube.com, a buffed and tank top-clad Lohan talks about his daughter's recent problems, saying, "The people around Lindsay are around Lindsay for the wrong reasons."

"They care more about what they can get from Lindsay than care about Lindsay herself," he says..

Crashing a Promising Career?

"I think Americans are getting increasingly sick and tired of this kind of idiotic, self-destructive and very dangerous behavior, " prominent Los Angeles publicist Michael Levine tells ABC News.

The companies that insure movie productions might share in that sentiment.

"Insurance becomes prohibitive. When you have a movie star that can't be insured, the ability to make movies is significantly diminished," said Levine.

In fact, Lohan ran into just this sort of trouble when she received a public dressing down during the shooting of the recently released "Georgia Rule."

Last year, the head of Morgan Creek films, producer James G. Robinson, wrote a letter that landed on the Internet attributing the actress's frequent absences on the set to "all night heavy partying." Robinson accused Lohan of costing the production "hundreds of thousands of dollars."

And while filming "Bobby" last year, veteran actor William H. Macy called his young co-star "irresponsible," according to the Entertainment News Network.

Lohan "should have her ** kicked," for her frequent late or no shows, Macy reportedly said.

Despite others' public comments about the level of maturity and responsibility evidenced by her personal behavior, many still believe Lohan is one of the most talented young actresses working today.

Even though actress and "Rule" co-star Jane Fonda applauded when the producers of their movie took Lohan to task for her behavior, the Oscar winner has said she has sympathy for the young starlet.

"I want to say to her, 'This is not a dress rehearsal,'" Fonda told Entertainment News Network last September.

"She can access emotion like nothing … and when she was on the set she was really good," Fonda continued. "I just want to take her in my arms and hold her until she becomes grown-up."

Perhaps sensing herself the need for time to get her life in order, Lohan has bowed out of at least two movies in the past few months.

She reportedly angered would-be co-star Keira Knightley when she dropped out of "The Edge of Love" on the eve of filming last month. The biopic chronicling a love triangle that nearly cost the famous Welsh writer Dylan Thomas his life was penned by Knightley's mother, Sharman MacDonald.

Lohan also opted out of co-starring with Annette Bening in the big-screen adaptation of Oscar Wilde's dark comedy "A Woman of No Importance."

One commitment she did keep was playing the role of a woman with a dual personality in the thriller "I Know Who Killed Me," scheduled for release in July.

Chris Siverston, who directed Lohan, praises her work in the film. "It's fantastic to work with somebody that gifted," Siverston told cinematical.com.

"Her dual roles in the film were extremely demanding -- both physically and emotionally, and she pulled it off with true style," said the director.
