Celebs Putting Pregnancy News Out in New Ways

Some expecting celebs put out pregnancy news without saying a word.

March 17, 2008 — -- With expecting celebs, an announcement issued by a publicist with the de rigueur "over the moon" statement is about as passé as a Pashmina shawl. These days, news of stars' pregnancies emerge in sometimes surprising ways. Jennifer Lopez declared it on stage at a packed Miami concert. Lisa Marie Presley proclaimed it in response to less-than-flattering photos surfacing. All find ways to make headlines with baby news. USA TODAY rounds up how they've done it.

Christina Aguilera

Pregnancy number: 1

Mode of communication: Back in November, she told Glamour magazine that next, she will "enter into mommyhood." And on the January '08 cover of Marie Claire magazine, featuring the singer, her belly, a cropped leather jacket and an enigmatic smirk. This after months of no comment on whether she and husband Jordan Bratman would be parents, even as her increasing girth showed otherwise. And after Paris Hilton called her "the most beautiful pregnant woman in the world" at an MTV Video Music Awards party in September.

And now: Aguilera and Bratman showed off Max Liron, born Jan. 12 in Los Angeles, on the cover of People magazine.

Angelina Jolie

Pregnancy number: 2

Mode of communication: After weeks of speculation fueled by the flowing Hermes gown she wore to the Screen Actors Guild Awards and her refusing to answer a reporter's question about pregnancy rumors, Jolie finally confirmed her second bun in the oven. And she did it without talking, simply by donning a skin-tight frock that displayed her bump at the Film Independent's Spirit Awards on Feb. 23 in Santa Monica, Calif.

And now: Jolie is showing off her belly, most recently while hitting a bookstore in Austin, where boyfriend Brad Pitt is shooting a movie.

Jennifer Lopez

Pregnancy number: 1

Mode of communication: Her Nov. 8 concert in Miami, where Lopez told the crowd that she and husband Marc Anthony are "expecting a baby!" Duh. As if those bell-shaped tour ensembles and A-line dresses didn't give away Hollywood's most open secret. The famously hard-bodied Lopez later told Harper's Bazaar that it wasn't much of a secret: "I kind of feel like everybody knew anyway. I was on tour with a bubble gut!"

And now: Lopez and Anthony welcomed a boy and girl on Feb. 22 in Long Island. Look for baby photos soon in People magazine.

Nicole Richie

Pregnancy number: 1

Mode of communication: A glossy, gentle August 2007 interview with Diane Sawyer, with boyfriend and baby-daddy Joel Madden by her side. Richie used the opportunity to finally confirm her big news, which had been speculated about for weeks due to the skeletal Richie's suddenly more zaftig bod: "Yes, I am. We are. I'm almost four months."

And now: Riche posed with daughter Harlow, born Jan. 11 in Los Angeles, on the cover of People magazine.

Lisa Marie Presley

Pregnancy number: 3

Mode of communication: Her MySpace Celebrity blog in a March 6 posting. A furious Presley confirmed her great expectation after photos of her circulated looking significantly larger and more bloated than normal. Presley didn't mince words online: "I have had to show my cards and announce under the gun and under vicious personal attack that I am in fact pregnant."

As for the paparazzi: Presley was equally scathing: "How they have handled themselves with this has been nothing short of irresponsible and disgusting. … Ladies, You KNOW if you were pregnant and you felt you were expanding uncontrollably by the moment as a result and the worldwide media started badgering and harassing you for it, plastering you everywhere in an unflattering light, you would be mortified as well." And there you have it.
