"I partied too much. And did other things too much. Chemically. No needles or that kind of stuff, but . . . use your imagination," he told the magazine.
McGraw also talked about wife Faith Hill and their three daughters - Gracie, 17, Maggie, 15, and Audrey, 12 - and how his family compelled him to quit partying.
"When your wife tells you it's gone too far, that's a big wake-up call," McGraw said. "That, and realizing you're gonna lose everything you have. Not monetarily, not careerwise, but familywise. It got to the point where my kids were getting older, and it was way past the point that they noticed it. And I noticed that they noticed.”

"I'll be the first to admit I take it to extremes," he said. "I'm not one of those people who can sorta half-a-- something."
McGraw's new album "Sundown Heaven Town" is due out in September.
