US Women's Soccer Players Surprise Fans at Taylor Swift Concert
Pop star grabbed hold of the coveted World Cup trophy.
— -- Two of America’s hottest acts joined forces in New Jersey on Friday night when members of the World Cup-winning U.S. women’s national soccer team appeared on stage with Taylor Swift during her “1989 World Tour” stop at MetLife Stadium.
Fresh off their emphatic victory over Japan in last Sunday’s final, all 23 players arrived in New York on Friday for their historic ticker-tape parade and City Hall ceremony. The parade marked the first time a women’s sports team received a ride down the city’s famed Canyon of Heroes.
For some players, however, the momentous day was far from over.
About 60,000 elated concertgoers roared with applause as Alex Morgan, Abby Wambach, and a host of others joined the 25-year-old Swift on stage during her single, “Style,” waving American flags and swapping their soccer boots for dancing shoes -- if only for the night.
The heartiest cheer came when the pop star grabbed hold of the coveted World Cup trophy, posing with the award before begrudgingly returning it to the champions, telling the audience, “I wanna hold it one more time.”
The champions invited Swift to join their huddle on stage before receding backstage to chants of “USA! USA!”
Swift returns to MetLife Stadium on Saturday night before continuing her tour in Washington, D.C. on Monday.
